I Sewed a Thing!

Multiple things, actually, but this is the nicest looking and thus fit for the blog:

The seams are really messed up (I think the fabric was too thick in places or something), but I love it all the same. MK was REALLY impressed with the finished item. And then he got a gleam in his eye and told me to start selling them. I declined. Fabric cost + 4 hours of my time = a million dollars per bag. But then, I'd only have to sell one bag...

I used the Tote Bag pattern from Lotta Jansdotter's book, Simple Sewing. I bought the fabric at G Street, it's patterned corduroy and some cotton canvas I found as a remnant. Okay, so this happened when I started knitting so I shouldn't be surprised that it happened with sewing, but I got huge sticker shock while shopping for fabric. Luckily, I am very flexible when it comes to buying crafty items (I know, it's a gift), and was able to come out of a faint long enough to purchase several yards of stuff. That corduroy? $30 frickin' dollars a yard (Note: I totes did not buy a full yard)! Suddenly, a $150 sheet set feels like a bargain.

I've been knitting lots of stuff too. Behold, one Endpaper Mitt:

Just one, I'm not happy with the Rowan Scottish Tweed 4-ply and it's thick and thin consistency, so I'll try this pattern again later with a smoother, more regular yarn. Nice colors, though. I took a free fair isle class at the Capitol Hill Stitch DC, and now I'm a fair isle maniac.

I also knit a hat (pattern coming soon), a robot, and sewed a pillow case and a reusable Swiffer thing. Man, I'm really tired.

Holy jeebs! $30 a yard? It's a really adorable bag. Still, dang. Wow.

I like your Endpaper mitt too. You make such great things. :D

wow, that's just as expensive as buying cashmere yarn! caught the fair isle bug huh? soon you'll be hoarding all sorts of shetland yarn and dreaming fair isle swatches. Can't wait for the new hat pattern. Don't keep us waiting for too long!

The tote is so sweet. I'm glad you didn't have to buy much of the fabric, $30 a yard is expensive!

Wow, you have been really busy! The tote is totally cute. It also gives me hope that I can teach myself to sew. You know, since the sewing machine I bought is just collecting dust in the closet. The endpaper mitten looks great from here.

Love it! Its been a tote bag weekend all around, I finished mine too. But $30 a yard! Even Amy Butler isn't that much. Time to get my fabric out of the dryer.

Dang! You're on a roll. I sewed before I started knitting and $30/yard still sounds friggen expensive to me! The bag is gorgeous though, it looks like the perfect bag to carry around knitting stuff :)

Can't wait to see all this other good stuff!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the bag. I'm going to question you to death next time I see you about the Swifter thing. I love the idea, but am kinda grossed out by it.

Funny, I used the same tote pattern twice this week! Which reminds me, I should probably take some photos of the one I'm keeping for myself...Yours is adorable, I think the combination of fabrics is charming!

Fabric prices- yeah they sure can be expensive. Love the corduroy you chose too.

G street...been wanting to go there, but too afraid I wouldn't make it out. Might get lost in all the fabric...Gorgeous tote!

Cute bag! I wish I would learn to love to sew, but as it is we are bitter enemies. I really like the colors you choose for your endpaper mitt :)

Good job at sewing! I really like the mitts though! The stitch pattern looks like it has little fleur-de-lys designs. Really cute!!

yahooo! Yeah, not worth it to sell unless you can set up a sweat shop machine assembly line and get a fab deal on the materials. If you can't at least make your labor costs, it's so not worth it!

Bummer about the lone Endpaper- it looks great from here! Cute bag, though, and I can't wait to see the other things you've been cookin' up over there.

The tote is very cute.. I can't sew period.. and doing so emits my alter-truckdriving-persona... mitts are very cute.. Someday, I'll venture into stranded knitting.. someday...

My first bag (about two months ago) took me three days. It had three different kinds of interfacing (including horsehair, I didn't even know what that was and had to order it special on the nets), beaded dangly whatnots, and a full lining which gave me absolute fits. Now, I am whipping out ginormous pyjama pants for my fiance in an evening. It gets much, much faster when you don't have to look up how to do every little thing. Just think how fast sweater finishing could potentially go...
And fabric does NOT have to be that expensive. Shop the internet; there are deals everywhere. Of course, you should always buy the best you can afford and don't buy crap just because you think you are inexperienced because crap looks like crap no matter what you do to it, but seriously. You can find some wonderfully inexpensive stuff out there.
And the Endpaper Mitt is beautiful; I hope you make a second.
