Guinan

A slouchy hat for those days when you want to look warm, or perhaps a little alien.


Materials:
1 skein of Brown Sheep Nature Spun Worsted (100% wool, 245 yards)
US Size 6 (or size needed to obtain gauge) circular or double-pointed needles for knitting in the round. I used 2 circular needles.
Stitch marker for marking the beginning of the round
Tapestry needle for sewing in ends
Gauge:
1" = 5 sts
Directions:
Cast on 90 stitches, join in the round. Use your stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Set up round: *Knit 3, purl 3, repeat from * to the end of the round.
Continue working k3, p3 rib for 3 inches.
Next round is an increase round. *K2, M1, repeat from * to the end of the round. You will have 135 stitches.
Purl next 5 rounds
Knit next 5 rounds
Continue working the stockinette and reverse stockinette rounds until the work measures approx. 5" unstretched or 8" stretched. Or more simply, when you have 3 repeats of the alternating stripes.
Next row is a P round and the start of the decreasing. *P2tog, p3, repeat from * to the end of the round. 108 sts rem.
P next 4 rounds.
Next row is a K round. *K2tog, k4, repeat from * to the end of the round. 90 sts.
K next 4 rounds.
Next row: *P2tog, p8, repeat from * to the end of the round. 81 sts.
P next 2 rounds.
Next row (still purling): *P2tog, p7, repeat from * to the end of the round. 72 sts.
Purl 1 round.
K 1 round.
Netx Round: *K2tog, k6, repeat from * to the end of the round. 63 sts.
K next 2 rounds.
Next round: *K2tog, k5, repeat from * to the end of the round. 54 sts.
Purl next 2 rounds.
Next round: *P2tog, p4, repeat from * to the end of the round. 47 sts.
P next 2 rounds
Next round: *K2tog, k3, repeat from * to the end of the round. 36 sts.
K next 2 rounds
Next round: *K2tog, k2, repeat from * to the end of the round. 27 sts.
K 1 round.
P 1 round.
Next round: *P2tog, p1, repeat from * to the end of the round. 18 sts.
P next 2 rounds.
Next round: *K2tog, repeat from * to the end of the round. 9 sts.
Cut yarn, thread yarn tail through the remaining sts on needle. Pull tight and weave in ends.
